Recognizing Achievements!
Every year Goodwill recognizes extraordinary graduates,
volunteers, employees and community and business partners
at our Annual Awards Luncheon. Below are the inspiring
stories from the 2006 winners.
Employer of the
Year
Kent-Sussex Industries, Inc.
“At KSI and Goodwill, we do the same thing –
help people with disadvantages to succeed,”
remarked Suzanne Higdon, Training and Personnel Administrator
for Kent-Sussex Industries, Inc.
Since 1964, Kent-Sussex Industries, Inc. has been
a key supplier of contract labor and production services
providing work crews to run production lines, salvage
operations, general labor and project management.
In 2006, Kent-Sussex Industries, Inc. had the opportunity
to play a major part in a new undertaking with Banana
Boat, the maker of popular tanning lotions and other
skin products, when they opened up a new operation
in an old Dover-area Playtex plant that had long stood
empty. Beginning in late August, the project called
for the hiring of eight managers plus twenty employees
to work the production line - sorting products using
a company-specific numerical system.
“I was referred to Goodwill by Delaware Vocational
Resources,” recalls Suzanne. “Working
with Goodwill Workforce Development Coordinator Angela
Robinson was a positive experience from the very first.
The people from Goodwill really wanted to work; they
just needed a little extra help – which turned
them into very good employees.” Out of the twenty
new employees hired by Kent-Sussex Industries, Inc.
at the start of their new endeavor, six were from
Goodwill’s Job Placement Program.
“I see this as the beginning of a great relationship,”
affirmed Angela. “Working with Suzanne and KSI
was like working with friends.” Kent-Sussex
Industries, Inc. provides employment opportunities
for individuals with multiple and severe disabilities.
Their services and staff provide individuals with
the skills and confidence to become independent.
“We’re still looking for more good people,”
pointed out Suzanne “I know Angela is keeping
an eye out for us!”
